Kurt Hochstuhl studied history, sociology and philosophy at the universities of Karlsruhe and Toulouse. He completed his degree in 1980 and received his doctorate in 1983 with a dissertation on Alsace between 1938 and 1940, titled “Zwischen Frieden und Krieg. Das Elsass in den Jahren 1938–1940.” After working on research projects concerning the humanization of working life, he joined the Baden-Württemberg state archival service in 1984. Following training at the Marburg School of Archives, he worked as an archivist in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. From 2000, he headed the Freiburg State Archives. His research focused on the history of democracy in southwestern Germany, emigration from the region, and biographies from southern Baden.
