Kelly Sue DeConnick (born 1970) discovered comics as a child in Germany, where her family lived while her father was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. She later earned a degree in theater studies in the United States and initially worked on English-language editions of Japanese manga as well as in comics editorial roles. She went on to write comics of her own, including stories for 30 Days of Night, Supergirl, Ghost, Lady Sif, and the Avengers. She also established Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel in the comics. Her creator-owned work includes the weird Western Pretty Deadly and the science-fiction series Bitch Planet.
