Katsuhiro Otomo

Katsuhiro Otomo, born in Miyagi in 1954, is a Japanese manga artist. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 19 and published his first comic there, “Gun Report,” an adaptation of Prosper Mérimée’s “Mateo Falcone.” His artistic and commercial breakthrough came in 1980 with the science-fiction story “Domu” (“Avenue”), which won the Japanese Science Fiction Grand Prize. Beginning in 1982, his series “Akira” was published, gaining international recognition as both a manga and an animated film. Otomo also wrote the science-fiction series “Sarah,” illustrated by Takumi Nagayasu.
