Joseph Smith Jr. (1806–1844) was a religious leader who founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830 and led it until his violent death. From 1820 onward, he reported receiving revelations that were later recorded in works including the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. According to the tradition surrounding his work, he translated ancient writings with the aid of a Urim and Thummim; these writings were published as the Book of Mormon.
