Jonathan Riley-Smith (1938–2016) was Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Emmanuel College. He published extensively on the history of the Crusades. His major works include *The First Crusade and the Idea of Crusading* (1986), *The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades* (1995), *What Were the Crusades?* (2002), and *The Crusades, Christianity and Islam* (2008).
