John Bunyan

John Bunyan (1628–1688) was an English preacher and writer. He originally worked as a tinker before beginning to preach in Bedford and elsewhere in England. Because he preached without official state and church authorization during a period of religious persecution, he was imprisoned for a total of about twelve years. He wrote numerous religious works, including his best-known book, *The Pilgrim’s Progress*, as well as *The Holy War*.
