Johann Brandstetter was born in Upper Bavaria in 1959 and trained in classical painting and restoration. After working as a restorer, he turned to artistic illustration. Over the course of his career, he illustrated nearly 200 books, particularly books about nature and books for young readers. His work received several awards, including distinctions from the German Academy for Children’s and Young Adult Literature for four of his books. Study trips to Africa, Asia and Central America inspired his series of images Symbiosen, which was exhibited in Salzburg in 2016–17. The book of the same name, with text by Josef Reichholf, was named Knowledge Book of the Year.
