Jerry Siegel (1914–?) was an American comic-book writer. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of six children of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. During high school he met Joe Shuster, and together they developed Superman. Siegel wrote the stories while Shuster provided the artwork. Superman first appeared in comics in 1938 and became one of the most influential characters in comic-book history. Siegel later worked again for DC Comics and contributed to characters including Doctor Occult, the Spectre, and the Star-Spangled Kid. With Shuster, he also created Funnyman and wrote for several other comic-book publishers.
