Jean Giono (1895–1970) was a French writer. He was born in Manosque, Provence, and died there. His extensive body of work includes novels, poetry, and plays. His prose often portrays the people of his native region and contrasts the nature-oriented life of mountain farmers and shepherds with modern mass society, militarism, and technological alienation. Giono was a committed pacifist. He was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1954. In 1941, he published a French translation of Herman Melville’s *Moby-Dick* together with Lucien Jaques.
