Jaroslav Hasek

Jaroslav Hašek (1883–1923) was a Czech writer and satirist. He initially worked, among other things, as a bank clerk and later for Prague newspapers before becoming known for his humorous and satirical stories. He is best remembered for the unconventional soldier Schweik, the central character of his unfinished novel *The Good Soldier Švejk*. Hašek also wrote numerous shorter prose works. He was born in Prague and died in Lipnice in 1923.
