James C. Whittaker (born 1901) was an American author who served as a lieutenant and co-pilot of an eight-man aircrew during the Second World War. After the crew made an emergency landing over the Pacific, seven members were rescued alive following a 21-day struggle for survival. Whittaker recounted the experience in his best-known work, *We Thought We Heard the Angels Sing*, published in three parts in the American magazine *Life* in 1943 before appearing in book form.
