Jacqueline Harpman was born in 1929 in Etterbeek, Belgium. During the Nazi persecution, her family fled to Casablanca and returned to Belgium only after the Second World War. After studying French literature, she began training as a doctor but was unable to complete it because of tuberculosis. She subsequently turned to writing and earned a degree in psychoanalysis in 1980. Harpman published more than 15 novels and received numerous literary awards.
