Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818–1883) was a Russian writer. He studied literature and philosophy in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Berlin, then worked briefly in the civil service before turning to literature. His work includes short stories, novels, poetry, plays, and comedies. He is particularly regarded as one of the major Russian writers of the nineteenth century and an important European short-story author.
