Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929) was an Austrian writer, dramatist, lyric poet, and librettist. After studying law and Romance languages and earning a doctorate, he worked as a freelance writer. He is regarded as an important representative of the German-language fin de siècle and Viennese modernism. His best-known works include the mystery play “Jedermann” and opera librettos written for Richard Strauss, including “Der Rosenkavalier” and “Ariadne auf Naxos.” Together with Strauss and Max Reinhardt, Hofmannsthal helped establish the Salzburg Festival.
