Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. After graduating from Saint Paul’s University, he moved to the United States in 1970 and began his career as a photographer in New York in 1974. He gained international recognition for the precise concepts and techniques of series such as “Seascapes” and “Theaters.” His work was collected by major art museums worldwide and received numerous awards, including the Mainichi Art Award (1988), the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2001), the Praemium Imperiale (2009), and the Isamu Noguchi Award (2014). In 2008, he co-founded the New Material Research Laboratory with architect Tomoyuki Sakakida. In addition to photography, his work encompassed literary and architectural projects.
