Hermann Kurzke

Hermann Kurzke (1943–2024) was a professor of modern German literature at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He studied German and Catholic theology at the universities of Munich and Würzburg. He became known especially for his work on Thomas Mann, including the biography *Thomas Mann: Das Leben als Kunstwerk* (1999). Kurzke was a co-editor of the *Great Annotated Frankfurt Edition* of Thomas Mann’s works, letters, and diaries, and co-edited a six-volume edition of Mann’s essays with Stephan Stachorski.
