Herbert Achternbusch (1938–2022) was a writer, filmmaker, actor, and painter. Born in Munich, he grew up with his grandmother in the Bavarian Forest and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. From the 1960s onward, he published novels, stories, screenplays, plays, and radio dramas. His notable films include *Das Andechser Gefühl* (1974), *Die Atlantikschwimmer* (1976), *Das Gespenst* (1982), and *Heilt Hitler* (1986); he also wrote books including *Die Macht des Löwengebrülls* (1970) and *Die Alexanderschlacht* (1971). His work received numerous awards, including the German Film Award, the Petrarca Prize, and the Mülheim Playwrights’ Prize.
