Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was a photographer born in Berlin who became known primarily for his fashion and nude photography. He gained international recognition especially through his work for various editions of Vogue. His visual style was marked by staged everyday situations, dramatic lighting, and unconventional compositions. Among his best-known publications is the book Big Nudes. Newton received numerous honors, including the German Federal Cross of Merit and, in France, the title of Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He died in a traffic accident in Hollywood in January 2004. Shortly before his death, he donated around 1,000 works from his archive to his native city of Berlin.
