Heimito Doderer

Heimito von Doderer (1896–1966) was an Austrian writer. After returning from Russian captivity, he studied history and psychology in Vienna and earned a doctorate. From 1923 onward, he worked as a freelance writer. He became particularly known for his major Vienna novels The Strudlhofstiege (1951) and The Demons (1956); other notable works include A Murder Everyone Commits and The Merovingians. In 1957 he received the Grand Austrian State Prize, followed in 1964 by the Grand Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
