Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht was born in Würzburg in 1948. He studied Romance studies, German studies, philosophy and sociology in Munich, Regensburg, Salamanca and Pavia. After completing his habilitation, he taught at the universities of Konstanz, Bochum and Siegen. From 1989 to 2018, he was a professor of comparative literature and literary studies at Stanford University, where he later became emeritus. His fields of work include the history of Romance-language literatures, literary and discourse theory, and aesthetic experience. His books include *Reading Moods*, *After 1945* and *California Graffiti*. In 2015, he received the Culture Prize of the City of Würzburg.
