Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen

Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen was born in Gelnhausen in 1621 or 1622. He experienced the Thirty Years’ War at close quarters from 1634 to 1648, first as a stable boy, then as a soldier, and finally as a regimental clerk. After the war, he worked as a castle and estate administrator in the Upper Rhine region. He died in August 1676 while serving as mayor of Renchen.
