Hanns-Josef Ortheil, born in Cologne in 1951, is a German author and pianist. He taught literary or creative writing and cultural journalism at the University of Hildesheim. His work received numerous distinctions, including the Villa Massimo Fellowship in Rome, the Thomas Mann Prize, the Nicolas Born Prize, the Stefan Andres Prize and the Hannelore Greve Literature Prize. His novels were translated into more than twenty languages. His novel “Schwebebahnen” was published by Luchterhand in 2025.
