Ha Jin (哈金) was born in 1956 in Jinzhou in northeastern China. At the age of 14, during the Cultural Revolution, he was conscripted into the military and served for five years on the Chinese-Soviet border. He began studying at Harbin University in 1977 and emigrated to the United States in 1985, where he worked as a professor of English literature. His works have been translated into many languages and received numerous awards, including the National Book Award for his novel *Waiting*.
