Gunter Martens

Gunter Martens was born in Hamburg. He studied German literature, philosophy and classical philology at the universities of Hamburg and Münster, completing his doctorate in 1968 with a dissertation on the cult of life in Expressionism. From 1960, he worked as a research assistant and later as a senior academic adviser at the University of Hamburg. In 1977, he was appointed professor of German literary studies at the university’s Department of Literary Studies; he became professor emeritus in 1999. His publications include the Rowohlt monographs “Friedrich Hölderlin” (1986) and, co-authored with Annemarie Post-Martens, “Rainer Maria Rilke” (2008).
