Guillermo Cabrera Infante

Guillermo Cabrera Infante (1929–2005) was a Cuban writer, journalist, and film critic. Born in Gibara, Cuba, he worked as a journalist after briefly studying at the journalism school in Havana. He co-founded the Cinemateca de Cuba and directed it from 1951 to 1956; from 1954, he published film criticism under the pseudonym “G. Caín.” After the Cuban Revolution, he served as director of the national film institute and editor-in-chief of the literary supplement Lunes de Revolución. He went into exile in 1965. He became widely known for the novel Tres tristes tigres (1967), which received Spain’s Premio Biblioteca Breve in 1964. In 1997, he was awarded the Premio Cervantes. His other notable works include Holy smoke, Vista del amanecer en el trópico, and Así en la paz como en la guerra. Cabrera Infante died in London in 2005.
