Guat Eng Chuah was born in 1943 in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. She studied English literature at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur in the 1960s and German literature at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in the 1970s. She worked for many years as a management consultant and received a doctorate from the National University of Malaysia in 2008. Her first novel, “Echoes of Silence” (1994/2008), is regarded as the first post-independence novel written in English by a Malaysian woman. Her second novel, “Days of Change” (2010), was longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award.
