Gretel Adorno, née Karplus, was born in Berlin in 1902 and held a doctorate in chemistry. From 1933 to 1937, she ran a leather-glove company in Berlin. In the late 1920s, she was connected with intellectuals including Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, and Bertolt Brecht. She met Theodor W. Adorno in 1923, and they married in exile in London in 1937. In 1938, they emigrated to the United States and returned to Germany in 1953. Gretel Adorno died in 1993.
