Gioconda Belli was born in 1948 in Managua, Nicaragua. From 1970 onward, she participated in the resistance against the Somoza dictatorship. Her international breakthrough came in 1988 with the novel *The Inhabited Woman*, which also established her reputation in Germany. She published numerous novels and poetry collections, as well as an autobiography, and became one of the best-known Latin American authors internationally.
