Georges Bizet, whose full name was Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, was a French composer. He was born in Paris in 1838 and died in Bougival near Paris in 1875. Bizet studied at the Paris Conservatoire, among others with Antoine François Marmontel, Charles Gounod and Fromental Halévy. In 1857, he won the Prix de Rome. He subsequently worked as a private music teacher, répétiteur and composer for the stage. His operas include *Les pêcheurs de perles*, *La jolie fille de Perth* and *Djamileh*. He became internationally renowned above all for *Carmen*, which premiered in 1875.
