Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian writer and journalist. Born in Aracataca, Colombia, he initially worked as a journalist after studying law. His extensive body of work included novels, stories, short fiction, reportage, columns, screenplays and memoirs. Following the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude, he became regarded as one of the most important writers in world literature. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. García Márquez died in Mexico City.
