Friedrich Wolf (1888–1953) was a German physician, writer, and playwright. He studied medicine and earned his doctorate in 1913. His diverse body of work includes plays, novels, short stories, radio dramas, screenplays, and children’s books. Among his best-known plays are “Cyankali,” “The Sailors of Cattaro,” and “Professor Mamlock”; his animal stories and fairy tales were also widely read. After emigrating during the Nazi era, Wolf returned to Germany in 1945. From 1949 to 1951, he served as the first ambassador of the GDR to Poland.
