Friedrich Torberg

Friedrich Torberg (1908–1979) was an Austrian narrator, essayist, critic, and translator. He studied in Prague and Vienna and began his career as a publicist and theater critic. In 1938 he emigrated via Switzerland to France; in 1940 he fled to the United States, where he worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and New York. He returned to Vienna in 1951. In 1954 he was one of the co-founders of the cultural and political journal Forum and edited it for several years. Torberg is best known for the novel Der Schüler Gerber and the story collections about Tante Jolesch. His novel Hier bin ich, mein Vater received the Julius Reich Prize.
