Federico Hindermann (1921–2012) was born in Biella, Piedmont. His father was Swiss and his mother Italian. He spent his childhood in Turin and his youth in Basel. Hindermann taught German in Oxford and was a professor of Romance philology in Erlangen. He worked in Zurich as a translator and editor and headed the Manesse Verlag from 1971 to 1987. His publications include the bilingual poetry collection *Fügsam dagegen / Docile contro*.
