Erwin Strittmatter

Erwin Strittmatter (1912–1994) was a German writer. Born in Spremberg to a baker and small farmer, he left secondary school at the age of 17 and trained as a baker. He subsequently worked in various occupations, including baker, local correspondent, municipal official and newspaper editor. From 1951 onward, he worked as a freelance author. His best-known works include the novels »Ochsenkutscher« (1950) and »Tinko« (1954), for which he received the National Prize, as well as the trilogies »Der Wundertäter« and »Der Laden«. Strittmatter died in 1994 in Schulzenhof near Gransee.
