Ernst Penzoldt (1892–1955) was a German writer, sculptor, painter, and graphic artist. Born in Erlangen, he died in Munich. After studying at the art academies in Weimar and Kassel, he initially worked as a visual artist. Following the First World War, he turned to writing, which he described as his “war injury.” His successful works include the novel “Der arme Chatterton” (1928), the picaresque novel “Die Powenzbande” (1930), “Kleiner Erdenwurm” (1934), “Der dankbare Patient” (1937), and the stories “Idolino” (1935), “Korporal Mombour” (1941), and “Squirrel” (1954).
