Ernst Bloch

Ernst Simon Bloch (1885–1977) was a German philosopher. He studied in Munich and Würzburg, received his doctorate in 1908, and after the Second World War held a professorship in philosophy in Leipzig. In 1961, after giving a lecture in Tübingen, he remained in West Germany and taught there until his death. His major works include The Spirit of Utopia, The Principle of Hope, Subject–Object: Explanations of Hegel, and Natural Law and Human Dignity. A committed opponent of war, Bloch emigrated to Switzerland after the Nazi seizure of power and later went into exile in the United States via several European countries.
