Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) was a British polar explorer born in Ireland. From 1901 to 1904, he took part in Robert F. Scott’s Antarctic expedition. In 1907, he led an expedition that aimed to reach the South Pole but turned back shortly before its goal. During the expedition, his team climbed Mount Erebus and located the magnetic South Pole. Following the Endurance expedition of 1914, Shackleton set out on his final Antarctic voyage in 1921. He died aboard his ship, Quest, in 1922.
