Erika Schmied was born in Uelzen in 1935. She studied graphic arts and art history in Hamburg and worked for more than 30 years at the Hoffmann und Campe publishing house, including as an editor and art director for the magazine MERIAN. She is also known as a photographer and edited, among other works, portrait books on Thomas Bernhard and Peter Kurzeck.
