Erika Mann (1905–1969) was born in Munich. She initially worked as an actress and journalist. In 1933, she co-founded the political cabaret Die Pfeffermühle in Munich with Therese Giehse. A few weeks later, she went into exile with the troupe. From 1936 onward, she lived mainly in the United States, where she worked as a lecturer and writer. During the Second World War, she contributed to the BBC’s programs for Germany and worked as a war correspondent for the Allies. She died in Zurich.
