Erich Hoepke worked for several decades in heavy-duty and commercial vehicle technology. Alongside various positions in industry, he taught transport, logistics and freight forwarding at the Berufsakademie Mannheim from 1980 to 2007. Hoepke also worked as a specialist correspondent for the journals Autotechnische Zeitschrift (ATZ) and Motortechnische Zeitschrift (MTZ). As an expert in commercial vehicle technology, he led events at the Haus der Technik in Essen and the Technische Akademie in Esslingen.
