Eric Kandel, born in Vienna in 1929, is an Austrian-American neuroscientist. In 1939, he emigrated to the United States with his Jewish family. He studied history and literature at Harvard University and medicine at New York University, and became a professor at Columbia University in New York in 1974. In 2000, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research. His autobiographical book, “In Search of Memory,” recounts his life and the development of his research. Kandel is also known as an enthusiastic art collector.
