Emmy Hennings (1885–1948), born in Flensburg, began her career as an actress and recitation artist in variety theatres and cabarets. She later worked as a poet and writer. After the death of her husband, Hugo Ball, she also wrote his biography and cared for his literary estate. Her writing addressed, among other subjects, the relationship between delinquency and the penal system, and between guilt and atonement.
