Elizabeth Jane Howard

Elizabeth Jane Howard (1923–2014) was a British writer. Before publishing her first novel, The Beautiful Visit, in 1950, she worked as an actress and model. The novel won her the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1951. She went on to write numerous other novels and a collection of short stories; her autobiography, Slipstream, was published in 2002. In 2000, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). From 1965 to 1983, she was married to the writer Kingsley Amis and was the stepmother of Martin Amis.
