Edith Stein

Edith Stein (1891–1942) was a German philosopher and a student and assistant of Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology. After studying in Breslau and Göttingen, she earned her doctorate in Freiburg. She was denied a habilitation because she was a woman. Raised as a Jew, Stein converted to Catholicism in 1922 and entered the Carmelite convent in Cologne in 1933, taking the religious name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. In 1942, she was deported to Auschwitz together with her sister and murdered there.
