Alessio Fasano is a physician and researcher specializing in pediatrics and gastrointestinal disorders. He became particularly known for his research on celiac disease and for discovering the protein zonulin, which is associated with intestinal permeability. Fasano directed the Center for Celiac Research at MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston and taught pediatrics as a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School. In addition to numerous scientific publications, he co-authored a guide for a general audience with Susie Flaherty, the communications director of the research center.
