Don DeLillo, born in New York City in 1936, is an American author. The son of Italian immigrants, he grew up in the Bronx, studied communication at Fordham University, and worked for five years as an advertising copywriter before turning to literature. His first novel, Americana, was published in 1971. His extensive body of work includes numerous novels, plays, essays, and short stories. Among his best-known books is the 1997 historical novel Underworld. DeLillo has received the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the Jerusalem Prize, and the William Dean Howells Medal, among other honors. In 2015, he received the National Book Award for Lifetime Achievement.
