Dirk van Gunsteren studied American Studies and began working as a translator and freelance editor in 1984. He translated works by, among others, V. S. Naipaul, John Irving, Philip Roth, and Edward St Aubyn into German. His work as a translator was recognized with the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize.
