Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) was a German Lutheran theologian and a prominent member of the Confessing Church. He studied theology in Tübingen and Berlin, received his doctorate in 1927, and began teaching at the University of Berlin in 1931. From 1935, he directed the Confessing Church’s seminary at Finkenwalde. Bonhoeffer participated in the German resistance to National Socialism; he was banned from speaking in 1940 and from writing in 1941. Arrested in 1943, he was executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp on 9 April 1945. His theological writings and letters, which emphasized the significance of the Sermon on the Mount and Christian discipleship, have had a lasting influence.
