Dieter Borchmeyer was born in Essen in 1941 and was a professor of modern German literature and theatre studies at Heidelberg University, where he taught until 2006. From 2004 to 2013, he served as president of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and as chair of the board of trustees of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. His research focused on German literature from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, Weimar Classicism and musical theatre. He published, among other works, monographs on Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche. In 2000, he received the Bavarian Literature Prize (Karl Vossler Prize).
