David McKee

David McKee (1935–2022) was an English illustrator, painter and picture-book artist. He was born in Devon and studied at the Plymouth College of Art and Design. While still a student, he drew cartoons and contributed to publications including Punch, Reader’s Digest and The Times. His first book, Two Can Toucan, was published in 1964. Among his best-known characters are King Rollo and Elmer, the patchwork elephant. In 1987, McKee received the German Youth Literature Prize for You Started It! No, You Did! His picture books were published internationally and translated into numerous languages.
